Maybe Steve Jobs said it best in a New York Time interview in 2003: “Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

For our design firm the name formfunction. couldn’t be boiled down to anything more essential – everything we do is directly tied to it.

We are a multidisciplinary design studio based in Eindhoven in the Netherlands.  We work on a wide variety of projects. Our clients range from early-stage start-ups to well-established companies. We are not specialized in any product category in particular but are specialized in the process of design.

Our aim is to be the most vertically integrated design studio out there. At prototype level, whatever is being designed in our studio we want to be able to make in our workshop. In-house. This way we can iterate and improve on our designs, fast. Additionally, the time won by doing a lot in-house can be used for more iteration, experimentation and crafting of skills.

Continuous investment in computing hardware, software, additive & subtractive prototyping machines have brought us closer and closer to this vision.  Today, our tools already allow us to take on projects at lighting fast speeds.

After several years of working with full time designers and interns – the team is currently as small as it can be and consists of its founder Patrick Schuur only.

Like musician/producer Kanye West, Patrick can do the rap and the track. He is a true multidisciplinary designer.  With an equally developed left and right brain he happily wears the hat of the creative artist, the hat of the detail oriented mechanical engineer and the hat of the handy model maker. He easily swaps these hats at any given time in the process and can often been seen wearing multiple hats at once. To have these different roles available in one person means a project can be seen through from start to end. It is also beneficial in another way – it often means already early on manufacturability is baked into ideas & concepts.

The team might be small – the capabilities are not.
